It was one of the pre-hunt prizes for the Green Quiz Quest I mentioned in the last post and it's 7 nice baby wipes, a travel size wetbag and some wipe solution cubes. How cool is that? I never win anything but will definitely review the new stuff when it arrives.
Today was the girls first day in completely cloth diapers after a partial day in cloth yesterday and a couple days in cloth little gpants from gdiapers with their disposable inserts. Her rash went away within just the first two days of being out of traditional disposables (other than nighttime and she was a little pink in the mornings). This makes me think she was either reacting to a chemical in the 'sposies or just the fact that they don't breathe at all! My little lions prefolds didn't arrive until yesterday morning and it took all day and all of last night to prep them so I didn't have enough cloth to get by with. :) Since a big part of our goal with cloth diapering is to save money, I didn't want to spend a huge amount on our stash but because I wanted to get the girls in fully cloth as soon as possible due to Paige's rash issues stalking the FSOT area over at diaperswappers.com wasn't really a good option either since I was needing enough to get going with ASAP! (We'd spent so much time discussing Paige's rashes recently that one day we realized Kyra was singing Paige a little song in the car about Paige's little bum-bum.) This led me to decide that prefolds and flats with covers were the right choice to make up the bulk of our cloth diapering options with a few pocket diapers thrown in for good measure in case anyone who was a little less diaper savvy ever needed to change them. I chose 4 Kawaii brand covers from theloveyourbaby.com and also 3 different styles of Kawaii pocket diapers from the same site as they were VERY affordable (and cute too!). I'm very happy with them so far! The fabric is soft and stretchy (I didn't know what PUL was like so I didn't know what to expect.) I chose all snap closures instead of Velcro/Aplix as that was what appealed to me and so far I'm happy with that. The pocket diapers each come with two microfiber inserts so you can add an extra one for nighttime wear or heavy wetters. The diapers and covers are all one size meaning they'll fit a baby from a small infant to a large toddler depending on how you adjust the rise length with the snaps. (Paige still needs the shorter rise sometimes depending on what diaper she's got underneath.) For prefolds I ordered unbleached Indian cotton seconds from littlelions.com and am so glad I went with the seconds as they were very inexpensive and the flaws that make them seconds are nearly unnoticeable. I ordered infant and preemie size to use as doublers/inserts and premium/toddler size for use as actual diapers. (Only the infants and premium are here so far, the newborn and toddler are still on the way.) They came with some free diaper pins too so eventually I might get brave and try those instead of just my Snapi closures. I also have a bunch of flannel receiving blankets, some of which I had and some of which I bought super cheap on Craigslist, to use as flat diapers and cut up for more cloth wipes. We also have 8 pairs of Gerber cotton trainers for Kyra to wear under her covers when she's feeling pottyish which sadly hasn't been very often this week. Phil has been working on installing a diaper sprayer for me too and I love it! For my diaper pail I'm just using a plain small kitchen garbage can with a flip lid and no liner so I'll just spray it out with the diaper sprayer after emptying it. One less thing to wash and I figure if I decide I want liners later, I can always get them. So THAT is my starter stash. So far I'm very happy with it except I have decided I need a few more covers since I'm using them on both girls. Oh, and we had four pooie diapers today and I still like cloth diapering so I figure that's a good sign.

After the success with the last contest, I've decided to enter another. :) This time it's at clothdiapers.blogspot.com and the grand prize is a $100 gift certificate to the Cotton Babies site! They're the people who make bumgenius, flip, econobum and hemp babies if any of that means anything to you and if it doesn't go check them out at CottonBabies.com. These are the sort of diapers I DROOL over and I think I'm going to fill out my meager cover stash with some flip covers so it would be great to get to do that for free or cheap with contest winnings and you should enter too! :D The contest is a Mother's Day contest and the entry task is to write a short bit to a special little person in your life about why you're glad they were born. I chose to write about Paige but I think I'm going to try to find time to write one up for Kyra too sometime this week and print them off for their baby books.

On a side note, Paige got another tooth (on the top, right of the middle ones so she's finally less lopsided) just over a week ago and Kyra got her 4th 2 year molar FINALLY last month but I forgot to mention it. :)

Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-56397917443442250102010-05-04T09:32:00.000-07:002010-05-04T09:37:52.686-07:00Trying to make being green a little easier. So our newest adventure is switching to cloth diapers here. We haven't officially switched yet as we're still waiting on them to arrive (With two toddlers, you shop online for everything but tp and bananas. :D) I'm going to sew a few of my own I think too. This switch is partly financial in nature, partly ecological and primarily related to Paige's constant mild but uncomfy chronic diaper rash. Time to eliminate some chemicals! In all my recent diapery web searches I've come across the Green Quiz Quest which is an awesome green themed online scavenger hunt that will take place in July! There are nifty green prizes to be had so check it out at this site or search them on facebook. :)Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-64406594130980423822010-03-09T22:37:00.000-08:002010-03-09T22:43:43.168-08:00Long overdue update... and there are about 6 more saved that need posting.. :D<h3 style="font-family: georgia; font-weight: normal;" class="GenericStory_Message" ft="{"type":"msg"}">Today, PayPay cut another tooth (her fifth, the second to the left from center on the bottom), learned where her nose is, SAID nose, asked for Dad when shown his picture, "beeped" her belly button and helped Kyra put the cars away in the tub. Kyra taught her about her belly button, putting the cars away and where her nose was. Such big girls! Two weeks ago, Kyra's upper right canine came through and this week the upper left one FINALLY popped so hopefully we'll have a teething break while we're in Wisconsin before her 2 year molars start. Paige started eating solids for the first time last Sunday. (Yes, that was a few days early but she was definitely ready and that way Dad, Grandma and Grandpa all were able to see her get her first dinner (peas) and celebrate her 6 month birthday with her.) She's LOVING eating solids. So far her favorite seems to be squash and her least favorite is jarred bananas because they are SOUR from the citric acid they put in to keep them from browning. From now on we'll be mashing our own bananas. She grabs the spoon and pulls as it's heading for her mouth because I don't get it in fast enough. She ate the whole jar (2.5 ounces) of peas at her first try and now is up to two meals of 2-4 ounces a day of fruits and veggies. She's getting to be very wiggly and can sit up on her own in the bouncer. She rolls both directions now but still does better front to back. She sits unsupported and has for a month or so (don't know if I mentioned that before) and is definitely teething but no teeth yet. Phil thinks she'll be crawling before November but I think it will be a little longer than that. Her 6 month wellcheck was this past Thursday and she did beautifully! She only fussed about the shots and charmed everyone at the office. She weighed in at 19 lbs 11 oz (officially less than 2 lbs lighter than Kyra) and was 26 1/2 inches long. The doctor commented repeatedly on how wonderful her muscle tone was and how strong she was, predicting that she might be an early walker. When the two ladies came in to give her the shots (she got three of them poor thing) Kyra hid behind the chair when she saw the needles. As soon as they'd poked Paige and she started crying Kyra came flying out jabbering and yelling something that the only understandable part of was "BABY PAIGE BABY!!!" She was scolding them for having hurt her little sister. :)Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-66380242873023539162009-09-05T20:32:00.000-07:002009-09-05T20:37:44.888-07:00Just a Quick NoteWith getting ready for Phil's 30th birthday party, I just haven't had time to put up the post I've wanted to lately so I've ended up not posting at all! I need to get something up though or I'm going to forget things I need written down here. :) We've had a few firsts in the last two weeks. Paige started using a tippy cup last week (with just water in it) and LOVES it as she doesn't feel quite so left out at dinner anymore. Kyra cut her lower left canine last week also. At Kyra's appointment last week she weighed in at 21.1 lbs and was 31 3/8 inches tall. That means she's dropped from 53% on her length to weight ratio down to 19% on her length to weight because she's only growing up! It also means that she's officially 3 lbs heavier than Paige. THIS week, Paige has officially begun to sit up unassisted and hasn't looked back and Kyra cut the lower right molar. Kyra has been loving going out to Grandma and Grandpa Beebe's to pick blackberries, "'matoes", string beans, pears and blueberries. She has a blast seeing the food growing and then getting to eat it right away! She likes picking flowers too. The girls also had their first swing in a hammock out there last week.Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-19831410930668811262009-07-29T12:34:00.000-07:002009-08-01T09:33:03.784-07:00Two Babies Leave Little Time for Blogging!!!So, as you've probably noticed, I'm WAY behind on keeping up again... whoops! It just seems like we're having such a busy summer between softball, doctor's visits and just all the normal stuff that comes with keeping up with an 18 month old and a 3 month old!! The big news is that on the 14th, Paige got her loaner BAHA aid! She's doing great with it already. If you want to know more about that, as soon as I get the chance I'll put up a post on her blog about it all.

On the 19th, we worked out at Oral Hull again. (Well, Phil worked. The girls and I did a little weeding and shrub trimming for a couple hours because there is a limit to what you can do while wearing both babies. :) It was a lot of fun and Kyra LOVED the watermelon!
Paige had her 4 month check on friday (even though she technically wasn't four months until wednesday.) She did very well and the doctor said everything looks good. She barely fussed for her shots and didn't fuss at all when she got her oral rotovirus vaccine. She weighed 15lbs 2oz and was 25 inches long which puts her in the 90th percentile for both height and weight so she's balancing out and slowing down a little on the growing. (She was 98th for weight and 95th for height two months ago.)
Last Sunday Phil surprised me with a late birthday trip to the Rennaissance Fair. It was so fun! Kyra loved it too. :) She really liked the police horse that she got to pet that was parking cars. She also liked the dressage and jousting demonstration... until she noticed that there was a dog next to us to play with. He he. Her favorite part though was the blacksmith oddly enough! I can't wait to take her to another one... we'll have to try to find or make some itty-bitty garb before then.
Paige rolled over for the first time that I'd really count this last tuesday. (It was the first time on a totally flat surface so she did it all on her own and she's done it a few times since then too.) She rolls just tummy to back so far which is great so far since Kyra at first only rolled the other way and would get ticked off when she got stuck on her tummy. Of course, Paige's first true roll was when Amy was trying to get her picture on her tummy. :D Amy was very brave and tried some of the girls together too that turned out cute, if not perfectly posed. On Wednesday, she finally said it... but not to me or Phil! I was changing Paige on the couch and Kyra was entertaining her for me and I asked Kyra if she loved her sister and she looked right at Paige and said "Love you!" several times. :) She also is finally saying her own name as of yesterday. She also now says very clearly Elmo, Grover, Ernie, Big Bird, and Bert. I should try to get a video of her doing those, it's cute when she goes through her book and names them. She can't quite get Zoe yet, that's a hard one.
Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-19412739950338585922009-07-13T09:32:00.000-07:002009-07-13T13:13:02.908-07:00Teeth to Chew With!

Kyra now officially has all 4 premolars through and we're just waiting on them to be ALL the way through for her to start being able to chew a little better which is a very exciting thing for me as I'm always paranoid that she's going to choke on things. Maybe now I'll settle for cutting grapes into quarters instead of eighths...
We were out at the dogpark the other night trying out the "new" from Craigslist Baby Jogger (which works great, even in the sand) and the poor girl got all bit up by mosquitos. Thankfully she doesn't seem to have noticed too much for some reason and she didn't react too badly to the bites which makes them hard to find. We apparently need to start remembering the bug lotion and order her a sun/bug net for the stroller.
Paige is really getting vocal. Last night she just sat and chattered and cooed to us for almost an hour before and through dinner!
Phil's softball team had their second to last regular season game yesterday. It was the last for us as we'll miss the final game as we'll be out at Oral Hull Camp for the Blind and Visually Impaired again with the group from church working on things. The girls were mostly very good at the game even though it was sort of cold and no where near the 70 degrees that had been predicted. Phil's team won 31 to 13. Needless to say, they had a good time. :) That's 7-2 for the season so far.. tournament is in August so we'll see how that goes!Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-61749734368076129072009-07-09T11:33:00.000-07:002009-07-13T14:19:25.474-07:0018 Month CheckKyra had her 18 month appt. with Dr. Byrne yesterday. Paige stayed home with Phil while we went and Kyra was VERY concerned when we got in the car without the baby. In fact, she cried more about leaving Paige behind than she did about getting TWO shots! She was a very good girl at the doctor's office except for fussing when the doctor wanted to feel her tummy. She even stood on the big girl scale and at the ruler to have her height measured. She is officially 22.6 lbs on their scale and 30 inches tall!! Ok, so the weight was at least in part due to the fact that she was fully clothed and last time was only wearing a dry diaper, but we'll take it since it means she doesn't have to go back for 6 months!!! Yay!
Also, Paige laughed out loud tuesday for the first time! Phil was talking to her and being silly and she broke out in a great big grin and then laughed several little chuckles. So cute!!!!
We took the girls to the Sandy Mountain Festival Parade tonight and they were both very good and had a blast! Paige stared as everything went by and Kyra switched off sitting with John and Amy and didn't even try to run into the parade once. I think her favorite parts were when she realized there was a dog sitting next to her and stealing all of John's waterbottles from him. She did seem to like watching the parade too. :)
<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; We met up with friends for a picnic (Kyra had LOTS of fun "helping" me cut up fruit for the picnic) before the fireworks and Kyra played and chased bubbles with their kids until it got dark. Both girls watched the fireworks and like them. Kyra got just a little tense to start with but then relaxed in Dad's lap. I think she got more upset when we put two earplugs in and she couldn't hear us than she actually did about the fireworks! (We had to take one out before they started.) Paige liked them and actually kept her earplug in but she did get hungry and needed a snack in the middle of the show. We got home just before midnight and both girls were tired. This is the first kid's birthday party she's been to (with the possible exception of her own where she wanted to sit on one of our laps most of the time) where she's been old enough to participate some. She loved playing in the little kid wonderland of plastic Little Tykes outdoor toys in their backyard and THOUGHT she wanted to play in the pool until she realized the water was a little chilly. She never did get in the water, even though the other three girls were already in.

When we got home, we got out the Color Wonder finger paints before bed and she did some painting for the first time. She cut the bottom premolar on the right side two days ago and the top one right above it popped through this morning. I can tell the one opposite that isn't too far behind either. The poor thing is having a much rougher time cutting the big teeth than she did with the front ones, but at least she'll have some grinders in soon and we can start giving her some of the lettuce she's been asking for!

Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-13162027689488245602009-06-16T21:00:00.000-07:002009-07-02T07:30:34.084-07:00Firsts, Firsts and More Firsts!!!So Kyra has been hitting firsts and new things like crazy lately! She peed in the potty for the first time last week, said her first 2 word sentence verbally ("more please") and has been giving her first closed mouth kisses (it's so nice not getting slimed.) Her first premolar came through on Saturday and the one on the other side is VERY close to being through too.

The poor baby also had her first really bloody owie when she tried to lean on my legs while I was wearing a long skirt. She forgets that I'm not shaped like the skirt underneath and leaned on a part where there wasn't any leg to lean on and fell over, biting her bottom lip pretty good. I got her calmed down in just a couple minutes but she bled pretty good and got a big gash on the inside of her lip. She seemed to forget about it completely though until about an hour later when it was time for nap, then she was holding her hand up to her mouth and wanted to be held. ;) She tasted her first feta cheese and made some pretty sour faces and also had black olives for the first time. She loves when you put them on her fingers for her. :) When we were out at Grandma and Grandpa's house last Monday, she rode along in the Ergo carrier on Dad's back and saw the horses, but I think she may have done that before, I'm not sure. She thought they were pretty entertaining at any rate.

Paige now weighs 15 lbs almost even. This is at nearly 3 months. At 4 months exactly Kyra weighed 13 lbs 2 oz. This is a somewhat frightening thing! It's odd though, Paige didn't outgrow her 0-3 clothes any earlier than Kyra did, she just fits better into the 3-6 months clothes from side to side than Kyra did at first. We'll have to see what sort of a growth curve Paige settles onto as her growth slows down.

Both girls did BEAUTIFULLY on Saturday while we were working with a group from church out at the Oral Hull Camp for the Blind. It was the first time I've worn both of them together for an extended period and they did great! Even Kyra was pretty patient in the carrier for over 2 hours straight while I was helping with some landscaping clean-up stuff. During the afternoon while Phil and some of the other guys were working on setting up the Bocce Ball courts, Kyra plaed in the grass by Angi and I for a really long time and did a very good job of listening and staying close to us. That's probably part of the reason I've gotten to be SO far behind yet again! So I'm going to try to get caught up all in one big post!
A week ago Monday Paige had both her first appointment with her ENT and it went well. We didn't find out much new, but we really liked him! Then that afternoon (I know, long day for a little girl) she had her 2 month check-up with Dr. Byrne. She weighed 13 lbs 6 oz and was 23 inches long! She sure is growing! That put her in the 95th percentile for weight and the 75th for height. For comparison, at Kyra's 2 month check she was 11 lbs 2 oz and 23 1/2 inches long. :) The results from her hip/kidney ultrasound came back clear (Praise God!!!!) so she won't have to wear an icky sling to help keep her hips inline. When Joy, the medical assistant, came back in after the doctor had done her check to do vaccines with one of the other assistants Kyra started crying. Apparently she's figured out that when TWO ladies come in with gloves and needles there are going to be shots! She calmed down pretty quickly once she figured out the shots weren't for her. Paige was sleeping when they came to do them and cried just a little bit, then went back to sleep. She spiked a fever and was sort of fussy that evening and a little cranky the next day but by day two she was feeling pretty much better. I've decided to start a second blog to keep track of Paige's medical stuff regarding her little ear so it's easy for me to keep track of and doesn't take over here when she has a bunch of appointments near each other. I'll put the link in the sidebar here for anyone who's interested. :)
She's cooing and babling now and is just so alert! It's hard to believe how fast she's growing and changing. A couple we're friends with at church had their baby last week and she is a tiny peanut (5lbs, 14oz when she was born) and compared to her, Paige looks toddler size! Paige got a new papasan stlye bouncer (well, new to us, Yay for Craigslist!) that can sit in the bassinet part of her pack-n-play to try sleeping in at night to see if she'll go down any earlier. She's been wanting to go to sleep for the night around 2 a.m. and then sleep in, which would be fine if Kyra didn't get up between 7 and 8! The bouncer seems to be helping some. Last night I got her down to sleep for the night before midnight and she slept in her chair for over 7 hours! Definitely worth the $8. :)
Kyra has been a busy little bee the last few weeks too. She's adding new words/signs every day. We've started singing songs that have hand motions with her now and she LOVES it! Especially "I Just Wanna Be a Sheep" (a song I sang at camp when I was little, there are videos on youtube) because she can sing along on the "baa baa baa baa" part really well. She still dotes on her little sister and loves to kiss and hug on her, tickle her and help Mama burp her. She's eating like crazy, but still sitting right around 21 lbs weightwise, she's just so busy she burns it all off! Sunday is probalby her favorite day of the week. After church we come home for a quick nap and then head off to softball. She is a great sport and claps whenever anyone else claps, regardless of which team they're cheering for. She's catching on to the fact that her dad is doing something out there and looks for him now when I point out that he's on the field. She loves seeing the other little girls and visiting with the other spectators.
Yesterday she had two "big" moments. She used the potty for the very first time.... sort of. (I noticed she was needing to go and grabbed her and took her in there to sit on it and she went.) We have a nifty toilet seat where there's a child-sized seat that folds down out of the lid of the regular seat for people with little bottoms and this was our first time trying it out. I know this isn't a huge step towards potty-training or anything (we don't plan on potty-training until November) but one less icky diaper to change is one less and that's always exciting! The second "first" of the day was that she remembered how to climb down off the couch by herself without help! We've really been working on this one because she has a tendency to get up there and then forget how to get down and sit there and yell until someone comes to help her turn over and scoot down. Of course, after doing it right once, she forgot the next time and needed to be reminded. :)Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-80588984037919814932009-05-25T09:11:00.000-07:002009-05-25T12:38:13.652-07:0016 Months - 8 Weeks<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; (Well, they're both changing but Paige is definitely doing more aggressive growing at this point.) Kyra is still very much in love with her little sister and loves when we let her "hold" Paige (with some grown up help of course.) Paige gets more kisses and cuddles than she'd probably like, but we're just happy that Kyra doesn't show any signs of being jealous of little sister.
Kyra's language skills are growing by leaps and bounds. She still doesn't have a huge amount of spoken words but she's on par for normal. She says Dog, Dad, Food (Boof), Mama, No, Up, Echo, Duck, Papa, More, Done and Go. She makes cat, dog, elephant, cow, duck and car noises too. Her signs though are what are really expanding her vocabulary. She's constantly wanting the signs for new words and she's using them to communicate with us. She does please, help, up, baby, thank you, milk, more, drink and done and is working on some new ones and she'll string together two and three signs in a row to get her point across (like Help, Please, Milk.) She doesn't have any new teeth yet beyond the front eight, but we can feel the bumps where she's working on her premolars and I would guess that when those do start coming through they're going to come fast and furious! She had her first haircut yesterday and did VERY well for a 16-month-old (from what I know of children's haircuts at least.) Her hair was just so much longer on the sides than the back and so many different lengths that it was getting tangled too easily and taking too long to fix in the morning (20-30 minutes a lot of days and that usually wore on my patience before hers even.) We went to a place called "Little Clippers" on the advice of a friend who gets her little girl's hair cut there and it was great! They cater specifically to kids and most of the "chairs" are actually little cars on hydraulic lifts. Kyra was a little too nervous to do a car by herself so she sat in an adult chair (they have one or two) on Dad's lap for the cut. Julie who cut her hair was very nice and Kyra watched a movie and played with a basket of toys while it was being done. She did NOT like the blowdrier so we stayed and played on the climbing toys for a few mintutes after the cut so her hair could dry and Julie could trim the little straggles that were left afterwards. They gave her a certificate for her first haircut with a lock of her hair attatched and a balloon which she didn't find all that exciting until we got home. Now she has a very cute little bob and just looks so grown-up! If you live in the Portland area I HIGHLY reccomend checking out Little Clippers for your little guy's haircuts. They have one in Clackamas where we went and another in Lake Oswego and are very reasonable price-wise too.
Paige is changing every day too. In the last week her personality is just blossoming and she's smiling, cooing and laughing a lot. She really loves riding in her stroller, especially if Dad is pushing. She looks up and grins and makes faces at him. She's going to be rolling over before we know it, she's already close and can go from side to front/back or from back/front to her side but can't quite get all the way over. She's discovered her teddy bear and decided that he's a pretty interesting fellow. He doesn't have a name yet. Since Kyra's bear is just "Bear, or Bear Bear" we should probably get a little more creative on this one. She's going to outgrow most of her 0-3 months clothes here pretty soon and she hasn't even worn them all yet since we've had so many nice days and there were quite a few warm outfits in her hand-me-downs. She's wearing her first 3-6 month outfit today and it's not even that big on her!

Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-58839406726217999892009-05-20T21:17:00.000-07:002009-05-20T21:27:33.816-07:00Something Odd...Anyone notice something funny about the new pictures?

Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-61619281498920807502009-05-13T10:50:00.000-07:002009-05-17T20:04:31.559-07:00Mum's Day

On Sunday, Phil took us up to the zoo! It was BUSY, much more so than last year on Mother's Day. So busy in fact that, since the parking lot was full, they were shuttling people from extra parking to the zoo on buses. That was sure fun with the double stroller, but it worked. :) We had lots of fun seeing the animals but didn't quite get to all of them because Kyra was wearing out. Both girls conked out in the car on the way home so we skipped lunch out so they could have their nap.
On Monday, Paige was officially 6 weeks old!! She had her first ever bottle of expressed milk and did great with it, gulped down all 3 1/2 ounces! Now if we can just get her to KEEP taking an occasional bottle, maybe we can leave her for more than half an hour before she's 8 months old! She's just changing so much already. She's SO strong and has great head control, maybe even better than Kyra did at this age. She loves watching the butterflies on the swing and riding in the MeiTai. She's so alert and is always watching everything around her. She has the prettiest eyes and they're always busy.
We were at the grocery store today and one of Phil's co-workers recognized Kyra and I and stopped to see the new baby. She said Paige looks just like Phil! I think it's extrememly funny that I said Kyra looked just like Phil and everybody said no, she didn't. However, Paige looks just like Kyra did as a newborn (if you don't believe me I can show you pics side by side) just with less hair and everyone swears that Paige is just the spitting image of Phil! I see a lot of their Dad and a little of me in both of them. :)Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-92027148566442982072009-05-07T08:46:00.000-07:002009-05-07T09:29:02.927-07:00Grocery Store Survival With Two Under Two
The concept of "running to the store" no longer exists for me so it's a good thing Phil works there because otherwise I'm sure we'd end up with some pretty interesting dinners when a necessary ingredient was left out because it just wasn't worth the trip to the store. (Like the other day when I was debating about what I could use to frost Paige's 1 month birthday cake that didn't contain any butter.) If we don't need milk or diapers, I don't go to the store until we have a decent sized list going. I thought I'd share just WHY that's the case when dealing with our two little angels by telling about our shopping experience yesterday (the first one out with both girls since the grandparents left.) This was a GREAT shopping trip mind you, about the best I could hope for. We go shopping in the afternoon after nap and lunch are out of the way normally. We try to shoot for being done shopping right around four when Phil gets off work so he can help us get stuff into the car and then into the house without having to hang out there too long after he's done working. I started getting the girls ready to go at 1:00p.m., shooting for leaving at 3:00 since we didn't have too long of a list today. We pulled out of the driveway at 3:40. Other than being late however, we were in pretty good shape. Both girls had been changed, the baby had been nursed and Kyra had a snack. The grocery list was totally written and I made sure I had my wallet and crackers in the diaper bag in case Kyra got the munchies. The strategy for getting out the door is to put Paige in the meitai, grab the diaper bag, pick up Kyra and check to be sure she's still wearing two shoes and then grab the keys with whatever spare fingers I can find to lock the door before getting them each buckled in their seats while Kyra is reaching over trying to tickle Paige. Upon arriving at the store (right next door mind you) I have learned to park beside a cart return that has carts in it. Then I get out, grab a cart and after checking to be sure it has BOTH ends of the seatbelt buckle intact and no bent or stuck wheels throw the diaper bag in and put the buggy-cover on before getting Kyra out and buckling her in before getting Paige out to buckle her in the meitai. Once in the store, departments are hit by priority and temperature. If there are diapers on the list, that's first, otherwise it's just a matter of getting through everything as fast as possible in hopes of finishing before anyone melts down. Then there's the "mommy moments" that I still haven't gotten over yet. According to my mother, my memory and better reasoning skills are never coming back. For example, yesterday I found myself standing in the popcorn aisle staring at two kinds of microwave popcorn and wondering which had less calories, the kettle corn 100 calorie mini bags or the buttery 100 calorie mini bags... Thoughts like this make shopping interesting to say the least. Then at some point Kyra will see Phil down an aisle usually (she's always looking for him at the store, even if he comes with us) and will spend the rest of the trip going "Dad? Dad! Dad, Dad, Dad.." until locating him again. Also, when shopping with two under two, at least, with OUR two under two, every third person in the store stops to chat. They ask how old the girls are, comment on how cute they are or, and this is my VERY favorite (sarcasm implied) say "Boy, you've really got your hands full!!" As if I didn't know. Kyra's newest shopping trick is to wait until someone who's had the audacity to pass by us without stopping to wave or comment and then suddenly SHOUT at the top of her lungs, just to see them jump. So once we've finally knocked out all the room temperature groceries on our list and gotten the last of the cold items in the cart, there are usually one or two things I'll notice we've forgotten and have to run back for as fast as possible while Kyra is turning around and banging on whatever frozen items she can reach and thereby thawing them out that much faster. By that time Phil is almost always off work (since we never make it to the store as early as we're hoping) and he entertains Kyra while we finish up and check out. Checking out usually takes a while too because the cashier feels compelled to visit with Kyra, ask how old the girls are and of course let us know that "You guys really have yoru hands full!" Once we have made it back out to where the car is, I unload and strap in the girls, starting with whoever is the LEAST cranky (they were both actually pretty good yesterday) while Phil gets the groceries in. At home, I UNload the girls while he starts bringing in the stuff and then I work on getting the frozen stuff put away first and then the cold stuff while the girls fuss and then hand Kyra a snack and a drink in her superyard before grabbing the baby to feed. I'm lucky if I get the room temp. stuff put away by bedtime and about the time the last things are in the cupboard is when I'll realize that I've forgotten at least ONE thing that was on the list. Yesterday it was potatoes. Guess we won't be having potatoes again until NEXT week. :)Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-55349089541780457052009-05-04T15:43:00.000-07:002009-05-05T09:17:46.645-07:00Both Ends of the Chart

The girls both had appointments with Dr. Byrne (their PCP) today. Kyra's was a 15 month well-check to check on how her weight/growth rate was doing and she had a couple vaccines due since she's on a little more spread out than normal vaccine schedule. She weighed 20lbs 4oz, is now 30 inches tall and has an 18 inch head which puts her between the 5th and 10th percentile for weight (back up in the "normal" range) and between 25th and 50th for the other two. Paige weighs 11lbs 7oz (exactly two lbs more than at birth but she did have a SLIGHTLY wet diaper so we'll see what they say about weight at her appt. tomorrow), is 22 inches long and has a 15 inch head which puts her at about the 95th percentile for weight, between 50th and 75th for length and right smack dab at 50 for her headsize. I just find it funny that one of our girls is just barely hanging on at the bottom of the normal range on the weight chart and the other is almost falling off the top! They did both have very nice, healthy looking growth curves today though. :) Dr. Byrne is still feeling a small click in Paige's hip so she'll be having an ultrasound for that and at the same time they'll check her renal system as renal problems are sometimes associated with aural microtia (the official diagnosis on her ear.) She is also now officially referred to go see a geneticist regarding possible causes/complications related to the microtia and to see the ENT that the pediatric audiologist suggested who will also want to schedule her for a CT scan on her ear. Once you add in to that the early childhood intervention appointment we're waiting on a call about and her regular well-baby/vaccine appointments, that poor girl is going to be booked up for months to come!Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-33204544006390128062009-04-30T11:30:00.000-07:002009-05-02T23:48:35.309-07:00One Month?!?! The time is going by even faster than it did with Kyra and I wouldn't have thought that was possible! Paige is just such a wonderful baby. She's so mellow and content, she nurses well and doesn't have tummy trouble and she's a pretty good sleeper for only being a month old! She's already changed so much and is getting bigger every day! If she doesn't slow down she's going to catch her sister pretty soon! We had her first "birthday" cake tonight and Kyra helped me "sing" Happy Birthday to her.

Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-49874751672758154812009-04-29T10:48:00.000-07:002009-05-02T23:45:53.664-07:00Bye Bye Grandma!!!We've spent the last few days playing and snuggling with Grandma while she's still here, taking walks and doing some shopping. We are really going to miss having Grandma here to visit and play with us every day and not just because she was helping with housework either!!! I'm sure after two weeks of grandparents to play with Kyra's going to think old Mama is pretty boring for a while. We took Mom down to get settled in at the hotel by the airport with the shuttle tonight and ate Chinese takeout down there. Kyra was quite entertaining, especially when Phil filled up the in room Jacuzzi to try to soak out his sore muscles since the hottub downstairs the jets weren't working. When he turned on the jets while she was standing by the tub she yelled and ran over to Grandma, then went back, yelled more quietly, ran more slowly over to Grandma and repeated that about four times before she totally calmed down. She loved the big floor length mirrors in the room and was enjoying watching herself in them and she took the phone off the hook at one point but was TRYING to put it back on when I got over there to take it form her (I think it was the first time she'd ever seen a corded phone). Both girls got in a few last snuggles with Grandma before it was time for us to head home. October when we'll see the grandparents agian sure seems like a long way off, but I'm sure the time will FLY by as busy as we'll be keeping up with these two precious girls!

Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-71541048874522914992009-04-26T10:43:00.000-07:002009-05-02T23:51:12.236-07:00Playball!!!Today after church was Phil's first softball game of the season. It was a 2:00p.m. game which was quite a feat to get to with both girls since it was an ushering week for Phil and that meant leaving church around one or a little after to make it there for the 2:00p.m. game. We packed a picnic lunch but Kyra ate mostly crackers. Two of Kyra's little friends from church were there with their mom watching their Dad play and the older one who is 4 was over tickling Kyra. My mom commented on what a good baby tickler was and she replied "I am!". She should be since her sister is just about Kyra's age. :) Her mom called her back over to eat her lunch and her answer was "But she (meaning Kyra) LIKES me!" What that had to do with lunch I don't know but who's to question the logic of a little girl? I was amazed that, after a bit of fussing, Kyra actually took a nap in the stroller!!! Not a long one, but this is a girl who hasn't napped while we were out other than in her carseat while the car was in motion since she was about 7 months old! Hopefully this bodes well for all day outings in the future. The game went GREAT other than it making for a little bit of a hectic day trying to do late service and then the game right away (we'll either do early service or saturday night service before the rest of the 2:00p.m. games I think so it's easier to get lunch in.) They WON!!! The first game of the season! They were up by quite a bit after the first few innings (held the other team to 0 for three innings or so I think) and then ended up down by a couple and came back to win! How fun is that? Kyra loved watching the game and clapped quite enthusiastically whenever anyone clapped (including the other team) and sometimes when no one else was clapping (like when her dad was right in front of her at first base.... base coaching. Paige was less enthralled but content all the same.
Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-48263084413216906972009-04-25T10:30:00.000-07:002009-05-02T23:26:21.335-07:00All Tuckered OutThe girls' Aunt Jackie (this would be my dad's sister Jackie who sews, not Phil's mom's sister Jackie who also sews) sent Paige an adorable quilt and it came in the mail today! It has pretty pinwheels and her name on it (even spelled correctly mind you). Dad left early this morning so it was just the girls, grandma and I today. See the sad pouty look on Paige's face? I think she was missing her Papa. Or it could be because Mama was taking her picture in the swing instead of picking her up... Kyra was just STARVING today and kept asking for snacks besides eating quite a bit at her meals! What I wouldn't give to have a metabolism like hers! She did have a couple of nasty little tumbles today and her left ear has a bright red mark acrossed it. I'll be so glad when her feet are a little more coordinated and her body catches up with the size of her head somewhat so she's not so likely to take so many falls! Kyra got so tired after playing with her Grandma this afternoon and "helping" us organize the nursery that even after taking an extra nap she fell asleep on the floor before her bath! Poor tired little thing was out of it all the way through her bathtime but apparently it was a power nap that she took because once she got her new cute flannel nightie on (thanks Auntie Heather!) she was running all over the house so fast I could barely get a picture of her in it! She was so cute grabbing it and lifting it up by her knees and swirling it around. :)
Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-85496228315590630472009-04-24T10:22:00.000-07:002009-05-02T23:13:12.617-07:00Paige's 1st Pediatric Audiology AppointmentPaige's 1st ped. audi appt was today for her ABR test on her right (little) ear and a regular hearing screen on her left as that ear had failed the hospital hearing test. It went great! Phil couldn't get off work on such short notice without having to put it in as FMLA and since it would be the first day off it would have been a pain to get the hours paid because he used up all of one type of paid leave while he was off on parental leave so Dad drove us down there in the rolling tomato and mom came along. He did a great job of finding Emmanuel and decided that he would never want to commute through traffic. Angi and Chip were nice enough to keep Kyra for the day since it said in the instructions for the test to leave other children at home! I suppose we could have let her run around the hospital halls and lobby with Papa but I don't think he would have had enough energy after that long of chasing her to drive back home!!! (I know I wouldn't if I didn't have a carrier or a stroller with to contain her!)

Paige slept through the whole test like they wanted (2 1/2 hours!!!) and her pediatric audiologist is a WONDERFUL lady who is really nice and knows her stuff. Paige's left ear (the big ear) is PERFECT. She tested everything that could be tested on that side and it is fine. On the right side, she was able to confirm that there is a cochlea (sp?) and that it seems to be totally complete and can pick up high and low tones. She will go for more testing now with an ENT to have a CT scan and see if the bones, eardrum and ear canal are there and if they're present how much reconstruction would be necessary if possible for the ear to function normally eventually. The Audiologist is getting her signed up for Early Intervention right away and it sounds like she'll probably have a bone conducting hearing aid relatively soon that will stimulate all the nerves on that side to help her brain develop normally and so that if they are eventually able to reconstruct that ear that the nerves will be in place and so she can develop the ability to tell where sounds are coming from.

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; I did accidentally scare the bejeepers out of Kyra when I turned on the handheld shower head to rinse out her hair since she wouldn't lean back for me even when I counted 1-2-3's for her (she's too used to the big tub I guess) and accidentally turned it to the noisy massage setting instead of the regular shower! She screamed until she was dried off and out in the other room poor thing. Paige always loves her bath, although she didn't like it in the little tub quite as much as the big tub because the water wasn't deep enough for me to hold her head and let her float. I love that little thoughtful, serious expression she gets. In the evening we went over to Mom and Dad's hotel so Phil and Kyra could swim in the pool there with them. It ended up that just Phil and Mom swam and Kyra only modeled her cute swimming suit because the water was just too cold! She is awfully cute in that suit though, too bad being pregnant got in the way of her getting to wear it for mommy and me swimtime this winter! Maybe Paige will get more actual in the water use out of it. :)
Then tonight Phil's mom and Curt came over for dinner and they brought us the chairs that go with the diningroom table Phil's G-ma gave us when she moved out here from Prineville a couple years ago! The chairs have been waiting in their barn while we used folding chairs because we were slacking on getting them moved over and didn't think they'd fit in our car but they did all fit in the H2 so now we have 6 lovely ladder-back chairs, 2 of which will soon be obscured by highchairs. We got a picture of Paige with all the granparents while they were here posed the same way that my grandpa, grandma, grandma and step-grandpa were in a picture with me when I was an itty-bitty. Maybe I'll eventually get ambitious and scan that one so I can post them together. :)Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4992606111244738358.post-85804370768623358552009-04-21T08:54:00.000-07:002009-05-02T23:50:29.728-07:00Big Fish StoriesIt was SUCH a beautiful day yesterday for April!!! Part of my impressions of that could have been influenced by the fact that Paige slept SIX HOURS STRAIGHT on sunday night, but everyone else agreed that it was a lovely day too. :) (The first time Kyra slept that long straight through she was 4 1/2 months old, Paige isn't even 4 1/2 weeks!!!) We spent most of it up the gorge with my parents since they spent last night up there yet. We drove down to the fish hatchery by the Bonneville dam and Kyra thought seeing the great big sturgeon and feeding the trout was even more exciting than last year!!! It's been really easy to find Mom and Dad in parking lots this trip since they're driving a tomato orange Subaru Impreza for their rental car. :) The picture doesn't quite capture the oranginess except for the little glarey spot on the door. After the fish hatchery we stopped at a little park in Cascade Locks and Kyra swung in the baby swing while Dad and Phil went to grab ice cream for us. Grandma was nice and let Bean have a few bites of hers. Kyra liked it but as usual with her and sweets didn't get NEARLY as excited as she does about peas. While we were just hanging out back in their hotel room Kyra had lots of fun playing with her Papa. She crawled right up on the couch by him and sat there for a super long time while he teased and tickled her. Silly girl usually won't even sit with me to read a whole book anymore, she always wants to get down halfway through and stand on the floor while I read and show her the pictures! We also had our first real incidence of sisterly aggression, but it was unintentional, more like affection gone awry. Paige was laying on my lap and Kyra was visiting with her and she leaned down and tried to pull Paige's sock off with her teeth, biting Paige's little toes in the process!!! I don't know who was more startled, Paige or Kyra but Kyra definitely cried more!!
Kyra is terrified of the elevator in their hotel (well, all elevators actually.) It's almost funny because she doesn't get upset until it starts moving and it's only one floor so she has JUST enough time to start fussing before the ride is over. I am sort of dreading the next trip we make to the zoo on the MAX since that's an awfully big elevator coming up from the tunnel!
Today, while Dad got them checked into the hotel back down here, Mom and I started going through Kyra's outgrown clothes and sorting them out for Paige so they're ready to go as she grows into them. GOODNESS these girls have a lot of clothes! We actually are separating out a lot to give away now and there will still probably be more left than Paige will actually wear very frequently. At one point today I bumped my big enamel coated chili pot with my foot while walking through the livingroom where it was sitting out waiting to be put away and it made a clanging noise and Paige startled!!! This is very good news as we're still waiting for the hearing test on friday to know how well she can hear on the side with her big ear and if she can hear at all on the side with her litle ear and she hasn't really been startling at noises since she's such a mellow little thing. Later on mom bumped the pot on purpose to see if Paige would startle in her sleep again but bumped it a little harder than she meant to. Paige startled and Kyra jumped and dissolved into a big fit of hysterical tears that lasted almost five minutes!!! Goodness she can be so dramatic when it's getting close to nap time. ;)Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01904054094888971270noreply@blogger.com0
